Abstract

This study aims to evaluate students' ability in writing short stories with a didactic literary approach. The sample of this study is the short stories of seventh semester students of class F of Indonesian Language Education Study Program of State University of Medan, totaling 30 short stories. Through quantitative method with descriptive statistics, this research highlights the aspects of how to express didacticism, content or expression of didacticism, and language use. The results showed that students were able to apply the technique of expressing inauthenticity in the good category or 60% with an average of 23.83, but there were weaknesses in the presentation of inauthentic content. The content or expression of inauthenticity in short stories written by students is in the poor category or 24% with a mean of 10.90. Meanwhile, the use of language in students' short stories is in the good category or 71% with an average of 10.67. This study provides a critical view of the quality of students' short stories, emphasizing the importance of increasing focus on the presentation of inauthenticity, conformity with national education goals, and integration of the knowledge dimension in writing short stories. Although the technique of expressing didacticism and the use of language are good enough, the reality of presenting didactic content needs to be improved so that it is in line with the goals of national education and students as prospective teachers are able to integrate didactic dimensions in writing short stories more effectively.
